Music from the bunker

Sonhar by Silvino

This is another one from Studio Bom Dia in Mozambique via remixinhambane, and another really nice vocal with a lovely tone.

There is a whole dreaming theme to the song, and of course my remix went in the direction of a 80s sci-fi movie dream sequence. At least, that’s what it sounds like to me. With a bit of the 90s and maybe even some 21st century thrown in too. I tried to create a musical contrast between the going-nowhere daydream of the verses and the inspirational message of the choruses. That’s what I tried to do…

The lyrics:

It’s so nice to dream, to dream and imagine,
the world is so nice,
about all that you want, dream
and navigate in the illusion

It’s so nice to dream,
to dream and imagine the world is so nice,
about all that you want, dream
and navigate in the illusion

But if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
Dream until the horizon, … that all of us shine,
dream in the melody, day to day, dream, dream,

Its so nice to dream,
to dream and imagine the world is so nice,
about all that you want, dream
and navigate in the illusion

But if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go
but if you want to achieve something, go out and fight, go go go…

Vida Dura by Young Girl

I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to remix this track as part of remixinhambane.

This was quite quick work. The vocal is great, so it was easy to just keep going. The lyrics are serious but with a sense of humour, so I wanted to do something that was dramatic but still a bit fun. Hopefully it sounds good loud.

I’ve got some more vocal stems so there will be more soon.

Translation of the lyrics courtesy remixinhambane (with edits by me):

Life in this country needs a lot of responsibility.
The community suffers from a lack of creativity.
Cowardice is comfortable,
And you know you cannot be loyal to yourself.

I am an orphan, but you must not look at my age.
I prostitute myself and that’s what I am charged with.
18 years have passed and I have no property.
The suffering is eating me and my partner up.

A mature marriage with a lot of liberties,
We suffer much from our “Mozambiquebeing”
Those who desert, are those who look like they had no freedom,
… and who walk around us.

This existence swallows me up profoundly,
And the agony eats me up.

Inhambane, the land of dreams,
Inhambane a land with history,
Inhambane, the country where I was born,
I swear I’ll never rest.

Inhambane, the land of dreams,
Inhambane a land with history,
Inhambane, the country where I was born,
I swear I’ll never rest.

My life is like a magazine designed by a designer,
Ruin me if you want, without leaving a note,
The judge’s verdict about my life is bad, so nothing even happened/will happen
The main thing is to develop his own point of view, command “Terra”.

My vibe is Disco style
No matter what you do with your day, it always ends in a nap,
My complicated life does not fit into a pile,
The flavour of life, the complicated life of a wasp.

I go to the Red Cross with a squashed wasp in the middle of my forehead,
My mother kills me.
My past is bad – throwaway-style,
On the hard day our paths may cross,
And then we will make a party in the cell.

Inhambane, the land of dreams,
Inhambane a land with history,
Inhambane, the country where I was born,
I swear I’ll never rest.

Inhambane, the land of dreams,
Inhambane a land with history,
Inhambane, the country where I was born,
I swear I’ll never rest.

Kimmi In A Ricefield by Twin Sister

This is another remix. The song is by Twin Sister.

Overload by Baron Von Alias

The whole point of this page is to get ideas out of the way  like “Transport” and Give up and go home”  that have been silting up my mind and stopping me doing anything else because I never got them out. Then I hoped that I might start doing something else. It’s getting there. Still, this remix could be more energetic, but that’s partly because of my weak production abilities. I like the way the drums sit with the vocals later on, and I like that slightly drunk-sounding bass.

Blindsided by Luke Leighfield and Jose Vanders

Here, I have done the usual kind of electronic remix of a nice version by somebody called Luke Leighfield & Jose Vanders of a nice song by Bon Iver. Well, Bon Iver to you too, and good night.

Rock Wit U

It’s really hard to find music to fool around with when you are an alter ego. You can’t get to know people. Nobody wants to hang out with an alter ego. Nobody wants to be friends on facebook. Who would I friend request? Other alter egos? On facebook all I get is this little message every so often telling me that my friends are looking for me. They’re not! They don’t know about me.

So I’m reduced to trawling the internet for musical objects like some kind of enthusiast. Here is my science fiction remake of an old (depending on your idea of old) Alicia Keys song that was put online for a remix competition. The spelling is hers.

Alicia Keys – Rock Wit U

I didn’t win the competition. I came 108th out of 245, which is a bit like winning, I think.

Final Form by Everything Everything

It’s good when bands let you download the components of their songs and fool around with them. It’s easier than forming your own band and trying to manufacture your own components.

This was for a remix competition on Soundcloud. I didn’t enter, though. Don’t know why.

Some of the words are missing. Sorry, I know this is bad, but I don’t think I have mangled the meaning too much. It’s just that it was getting really long because I slowed it down by 20% or something like that, and you already KNOW how I feel about really long songs.

Writer’s Notebook

I’m trying not to make tracks that are too long. Even so, this one is nearly 25% longer than Eleanor Rigby, which it doesn’t seem to deserve. There are lots of songs in the world that I quite like but that I can’t listen to because they’re 2 minute songs that last 6 minutes. But it’s hard to make things that are short in the right way, I think.

This track contains a sample of ‘My Favorite Notebook‘, a poetry reading from archive.org. I’ve used this without permission. Sorry, I liked it. I’ll de-upload it if anyone complains. Seems unlikely that they’ll hear it, though.

Wire Dance

This is a quiet one. It feels like it should go somewhere, but it doesn’t really.

Transport

This one’s about transport.

Careful listeners will notice a weakness in the sound. I’ve uploaded it anyway. I spend my whole life worrying about weak sound, to the point where I can’t get anything done because nothing I make sounds like it was recorded by experts. It also doesn’t sound like it was written by J S Bach, and I can’t do anything about that either, so I can just upload it as it is or give up and watch some TV. There’s nothing on though, so here it is.
